How books can take you to another world. Copenhagen
I just finished reading another great book where the setting added a huge part to the of atmosphere of the story. It made me reflect on how, over the years so many books have inspired my travel destinations.
I am a big reader and thought that maybe one day I could write a book (they say there's at least one book in us all!) but it made me reflect on how descriptive writing can be. At times it can set my imagination going and drive me to my next travel destination.
I am sure you have been inspired to dream about or actually travel to the location you have read about. If so please share your story.
"The seven skins of Easter Wilding" by Holly Ringland. was the latest book that got me thinking
This best seller by a Australian author Holly Ringland begins with Ester Wilding returning home to Tasmania a year after her sister Aura 'committed suicide'. Ester searches for answers as to the why which takes her to Copenhagen and the Faroe Islands. The story is sad but uplifting and offers some beautifully written descriptions that make you feel like you are there. The book also includes themes of fairy tales about seikies. (seikies are mythological creatures that can shapeshift between seals and human forms by removing their skins) and swans which adds a mystic aura to the story told. Folktales have always interested me too so this book tick a lot of boxes for me.
I won't tell you the full story but suffice to say .. read it. It took me back to memories of my journey to Copenhagen in 1990. Yes, many years ago but after reading the book it brought back many fond memories that I didn't know I had forgotten. The detail of Ester's wanderings though the streets of Copenhagen reminded me of when a travelled those same streets.
This is me! Copenhagen 1990
Ester journey next takes her to the Faroe Islands, which I have heard of but knew very little about. The atmospheric mood expressed in the writing will make you want to add this location to your travel wish list too.
Have this happened to you too? Read a book that motivated you to travel to a location? If so, tell us about it in the comments section
Thinking about this has inspired me to write a monthly blog on the various places I have travelled to that were inspired by books
My this blog - Carcassonne, France and the book Labyrinth by Kate Mosse.
Till next time... continue to be inspired travels
